Is osteopathy effective for pain? What the evidence says

Summary written by the Centroterapia team based on a real external source — this is not original clinical content from the centre and does not replace an individual assessment.

Manos entrelazadas con suavidad, en un gesto de cuidado

It's one of the questions we hear most at a first visit: does osteopathy actually work? The honest answer means looking at the available scientific evidence, not promising results. That's why we're reviewing a report here from the Ibero-American Cochrane Centre, one of the world's leading organisations for reviewing health evidence.

The report, published in 2022, analyses systematic reviews on the effect of osteopathy on different types of pain. Its main conclusion is that there is some evidence it may help with lower back and neck pain, as well as lower back pain associated with pregnancy or pelvic pain. The certainty of this evidence is moderate to low: it points in a positive direction, but does not yet allow for categorical claims.

For other common reasons people seek care, such as headaches, irritable bowel syndrome or fibromyalgia, the report is more cautious: current evidence isn't of high enough quality to know whether osteopathy helps in those cases or not. "Doesn't work" is not the same as "not enough studies yet to know," and the report clearly leans towards the latter reading.

One point that we think matters for anyone considering it: the studies reviewed agree that osteopathy is a safe discipline, with a very low rate of adverse effects when practised by a trained professional.

At Centroterapia we don't promise cures. We carry out an individual assessment of each person and, when osteopathy can help, we offer it as one tool within a broader approach — never as a substitute for medical assessment when that is needed.
